Empowerment: what it means and how to embrace it
The voyage of discovery lies not in finding new landscapes, but in having new eyes.
Marcel Proust
Yesterday, as the waves rolled in along the wild coast, reshaping the shoreline, I reflected on how nature evolves quietly, without announcement. It simply happens in those quiet moments between breaths; in the persisting of water against stone; the ever-reaching roots holding the trees as they bend with the wind.
So too do we evolve. Like the waves shifting the sands and carving out the rocks, each shift in awareness shapes us, gradually revealing our deeper nature.
Personal evolution isn’t about dramatic transformations – it’s about awakening to our innate capacity for growth and change. As we become more conscious of our actions, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, we can intentionally align them to create a life that resonates with who we truly are.
As our awareness grows, we shift from being a passenger in our life – simply reacting to what comes our way – to the driver – moving intentionally towards our desires, goals, dreams.
So, what does empowerment really look like?
While external achievements are often celebrated, the real power lies in an internal shift – one that transforms how we see and relate to ourselves. This shift occurs when you are able to see your true self and connect with who you are at your core. You’ll know when its happening, as you will start to see discomfort in a new light. You’ll realise that discomfort isn’t a sign of something being wrong – it’s a sign that you are growing and evolving.
I remember the moment in my life when this happened for me. After years of deferring to others’ rules and expectations, I chose to trust my intuition and listen to that quiet, but persistent internal voice. It wasn’t dramatic – there were no fireworks or grand announcements. Just a quiet, unwavering certainty that I was finally honoring my own truth. That moment changed everything.
I see the difference reflected in journal entries from 10 years ago, compared to today. What stands out the most is not how much I have externally changed, but the way I relate to myself now. I am my own best friend.
Where once I might have dismissed my inner knowing, I’ve learned to trust it. Where I used to seek validation externally, I now recognize my own worth. This fundamental shift in self-perception is at the heart of true empowerment, moving from trying to fit into other people spaces, to embracing your own true nature and creating a space that is uniquely yours.
Why This Matters Now
The world around us is changing at an ever-increasing pace. The rules we learned, the roles we stepped into, even our understanding of what makes a meaningful life – is all being questioned and redefined. Many people feel unsteady amidst this change – and that’s completely normal.
To thrive in our changing environments, we need to evolve – to adapt and embrace flexibility. To do this requires a perspective shift, that acknowledges the fear and uncertainty, while embracing the opportunity that change brings.
You might have heard about neuroplasticity – something that is quite beautiful: our brain’s natural ability to grow and change throughout our lives. Science continues to validate what many of us have known all along – we never lose our capacity for growth and transformation. Every time we question old beliefs or try something new, we’re creating fresh pathways in our minds. Isn’t that extraordinary? That simply thinking differently today opens us up to more possibilities tomorrow.
The Path Forward
Through my own experience and my work with others, I’ve observed certain truths about meaningful transformation:
-
Trust Your Inner Compass
My yoga teacher embodies this beautifully. In her classes, she creates a space where each person can truly listen to their body’s wisdom. There’s no pushing, no forcing – just gentle invitation to explore what feels true in each moment.
This is a great representation of how to act in an empowered way. Pushing against resistance consumes energy and often keeps us stuck, missing opportunities to evolve. By observing the resistance, understanding it and moving through it, we open up possibilities that we may not have seen otherwise.
- Honor Where You Are
The wild, windy coastline where I live has taught me about resilience. The plants that thrive here don’t fight against the wind – they’ve learned to bend with it. Their strength lies in their flexibility.
Like resilient coastal plants, we grow stronger when we adapt, leaning into life’s winds rather than resisting them.
- Build Authentic Connections
Real transformation is about creating spaces that allow us to be authentic – where we can voice our doubts, celebrate our victories, and explore possibilities without judgment. It is about cultivating those rare, precious connections where we’re truly seen and heard. This varies from person to person – some find connection through heartfelt conversations, others in community groups or networking events. Choose what feels right for you.
- Take Deliberate Steps
Change doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful. Often, it’s the small, consistent choices that reshape our lives – learning to find your voice in meetings, honoring yourself with clear, compassionate boundaries, carving out time for reflection and solitude.
- Trust the Process
Nature works in cycles, and so do we. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter play an important role in creating and sustaining the life around us. We too have our seasons. Understanding and embracing your seasons of growth, reflection, shedding and integration is essential to sustaining progress.
- Your Growth Matters
When you commit to your own growth, you’re not being selfish, and you are not taking anything away from anyone. Instead, you’re contributing to a larger shift in consciousness – one person at a time, one deliberate choice at a time. By trusting your inner compass, honoring where you are, building authentic connections, and taking deliberate steps, you create a foundation for meaningful change.
Your growth extends beyond you. When you dare to grow, to speak your truth, and to trust your wisdom, you create ripples that uplift and empower others to embrace their own transformation.
In closing …
This isn’t about fixing anything that’s broken or becoming some “better version” of yourself. You are already whole. You are already amazing. This is about creating the space you need to allow your whole self to emerge. Like lighting up each room in your internal home, to truly see and appreciate who you are and the value you bring to this world.
That stirring you feel in your gut, that whisper urging you toward something more, isn’t a sign of restlessness – it’s your inner self dying to get out. There’s only one way to do that … and that is to continue to evolve.
Evolving and embracing your inner power doesn’t mean you are without doubt, that insecurity won’t show up, or that you are unaffected by what is around you. It simply means that you get better at noticing where you’re at and giving yourself what you need in the moment.
Remember, you’re not starting from scratch. Every challenge you’ve faced, every lesson you’ve learned, every time you’ve picked yourself up and kept going – it’s all part of your foundation. Like the roots of the tree hold it in the earth, your experiences have given you a solid base for whatever comes next.
Imagine what could unfold if you consciously channeled your power into creating a life that truly lights you up. What step will you take today to start?
Be the change you wish to see in the world.
